General life in IIIT on a decline!!!

Many a times in the recent past, we ave had discussions regarding the falling standards in IIIT in almost all the fields where it comes to talent. IIIT is becoming more of a work hub than being a place where different types of people with their talents flourish. Having spent two and half years in IIIT now, i think i can write something about IIIT… Hope my observations are correct.

A stark reminder of the fact is when guys of our batch win comprehensively in competitions like quiz and all… I would say the people who win are good infact very good when you compare them with other people but if you compare them with our seniors like Satvik, Ruchir and all, the whole group of them, they were just extra odrinary. I still remember my first year where in an Inter House DumbC.. If i rmr correctly then Satvik, Ruchir n Su used to guess things (meant to be done in 2 mins) in a petty matter of 30 secs or so.. Their chemistry and knowledge was just awesome.. back then we used to think that these guys have been living together for 3 years.. so they know each other quite well thats why they can do so.. but now that we are in our 3rd year, we cant find any such ppl in our batch.

Can the magic of 1-12 wing be ever revived again?? Dont think any of the ppl in 2nd,3rd or 4th year will be able to stand to those guys.. For us UG2K5 ppl… the 1-12 wing consisting of Gaurav Jain, Lohia, Bhago and company was something out of this world… Even last year we had ppl like Grawl Mr.Felicity and a bcbaaz sitting with whom you just cant stop laughing, Alankar, have heard about his escapades the day before his CAT exam and still scoring a 99.6% percentile, making him something like an epitome of sharpness šŸ˜› to me but somehow now 1-12 is just another wing… No offence to the guys living in the wing now but i dont think nobody will be able to live up to the charisma now…

Come to geekiness.. whoever has seen or met smr will always regard him as legendary and also Nirnimesh, these two were like the epitome of geekiness to us in our first year when they were the sys admins, they were like the Gods of Linux and Programming… Agreed we have people in our batch who are knowledgable and sharp but they were a combo of both.. I would say they were like a combo of Kulbir and Somani of our batch… About SMR’s memory i have an interesting story.. Then have heard stories about Shiben that he developed some games while only in his first year… I dunno what games he developed but he sure is a geek who can also sketch, write awesome imaginary stories, do an awful lot of bc on DF… then there were Manikandan and Ramachandra, our C tutors in first year who have left quite a mark on us.

Coming to multi faceted personalities, here again someboedy by the name Arun stands out orator, basket ball player, GK i have written earlier… Cracked the CAT n GRE.. what more can be said about him…

Then there is somebody by the name Pati, about whom somebody told me that he is so witty ki “vo akele baithe baithe poori basket ball team ki mar leta hai”, a very good basket ball player a geek by choice who used to look so cool in my 1st year that never in my dreams could i have ever thought ki he would be a g33k… who was one of the very few people who being in 4th year would himslef say a hi to me when i was in my 1st year during the interaction period.. šŸ˜›

Ofcourse if we talk about personalities from 2k2 batch,we cant miss out on Pranav Vashishta, the guy who can talk for hours on every topic, dunno from where he acquired so much knowledge… but he sure turns head… and ofcourse who can forget Satvik, the guy who scored cent percent in enlish in CAT.. terming that as an achievement would be belittling it…Then there were guys frm 2k2 like Rao, Joon, Ruchir and all with whom i have had no interaction but have heard stories about them…

Even though I havent had any interaction with ppl from 2k1 but they also seem to be quite a bunch of cool guys from the blogs of them that i have read, my only means of knowing them there are quite a few of them I would like to meet given a chance, guys like Utkarsh,Kunal,Jayaram,Rakesh and ofcourse our dailyrium Sreejith.. šŸ˜› these guys find time to blog regularly being in job and ppl in IIIT being vella all day cant blog and all… Am just taking an example of blogging but this is sort of a reflection.

We had our own college band but all the members have left and we dont have anybody to fill the void left by them… DO we have enough rock enthusiasts to carry on the legacy of Arun, Freaky, Bhago and all.. The answer is Zilch… We have a single guy aditya in our batch who can be termed as a rock enthusiast but none else and have no idea about the junior batch..

Then there was IV from 2k3 whose popularity throughout the batches made it impossible to have any event without constant chattering of iv,iv,iv, who being a topper and all was quite active and seemed quite diff from the usual geeks, though as i dont know him on a personal front so cant say much but one thing i rmr is that he usd to be quite cool in OS assign evaluations… šŸ˜› … and Sriram whose innovative hooting in the Felicity 2k7 will b remembered for long… šŸ˜›

Instead what has happened in IIIT now is… people come to college and start slogging, I remember that in our frst year nobosy used to go to reading room and very rarely were people seen in libraries but from the 2k6 batch , this number has been very high and the current first year is also not a step behind them. The current lot of first years seems to be very low on the enthusiasm front… Hardly any people turned out for the recenty held carnival. Our seniors will say that we were the same, i still remember Dash coming to rooms of each and evry prithvi guy to wake us from our slumber but that was work and it was morning but when it came to things like teacher’s day and all many people used to be present….

Even the regular strollers in the campus are also on the decline, when we used to roam around in 1st year.. there used to be many people we would encounter but these days you see hardly any people doing the rounds.. Wonder why??? :O

Song of the Day:- Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon & Garfunkel

These are all my views… a perception of what i’ve felt in my 2.5 yr stay in IIIT…

PS1:- If you are a IIITian and from any batch b4 2k3(including) then read it carefully.. you might find your name in here.. šŸ˜›
PS2:- Just wondering if ppl from other batches also felt the same when they were in our place.
PS3:- Fucking wasted almost 1-1.5 hours for this post and have exams from monday.
PS4:- Wish all the papers are so hard that nobody is able to attempt anything
PS5:- But i know it wont happen.
PS6:- The post has turned out to be quite long… but it demanded such length..

  1. Very true yaar………….
You dont find such ppl now…………….
Me too tired of seeing ppl going to lib and rr.
Being a cvitian i dont have the right to say so………but i liked iiit earlier ……..in our first year………..

  2. Everything u said, reminds me of similar thoughts we had about our seniors, super-seniors, and their seniors ..

but, the fact is, every batch has gems .. u jst dont realise that they are there in your batch ..

call it ignorance or self-esteem, u wudnt call the guy next door better than yourself šŸ™‚

yeah, there are some all time favorites, but then your batch still has 16 months ..

jst hope .. your juniors also say sumthin abt u ppl .. “that there was this guy called Himank, who called himself shaayar, yet had the worst sense of rhyming!!”

    jst kidding šŸ˜‰

  3. You’re making me senty. Yeah, college isn’t the same what it used to be. It beats me why people study so much when they’re gonna get good jobs anyways…now don’t tell me everyone’s going crazy after research in this institute!

  4. Awesome post after a long time !!! Phew !

I agree with what u said and i think neeraj sir has a point …. You would never call the person rite beside u better than you .

I agree ppl like Nir, Smr , Anurag are gone but wait man its just 3-1 3 more sems to go … And kulbir has started things like IIIT Radio , and now looking at things like IIIT IRC etc etc .

As far as rock fans are concerned you are correct the dedictation for rock has decresased exponentially šŸ˜¦ ….

And by the way seniors are seniors there place cannot be taken by anyone šŸ™‚

@Vipul Your comment looks like so Yash Chopras Movies tag line šŸ˜›

  5. And by the way i think bloggers like us will blog when we are have more work rather than when we have lots of vella time so ur anology doesnt fit here šŸ˜€

  6. And by the way i think bloggers like us will blog when we are having more work rather than when we have lots of vella time so ur anology doesnt fit here šŸ˜€

  7. @ Sandeep : Completely my mistake… when i set out to write this post.. I had it in mind but forgot abt them… šŸ˜›

    @ Vipul :Hmmm…

@ Nidheesh : Will go through urs.. someday I have time after my exams.. till then pardon me!!

@ Prashasti : Well atleast you break all the records on sports Day!! šŸ˜› Sports Woman!!

    @ !Sleeper : Thanx da… šŸ™‚

@ Neeraj : Hmm.. Your comment answered my ques.. Whether odr ppl had the same doubts or not!! šŸ™‚ Abt the shaayar part… I never try to rhyme coz in my first poem i tried to rhyme and was advised by people not to!! šŸ˜› Waise all the shayaris i have seen of great ppl don’t rhyme šŸ˜› So i am on the WAY to becoming a great by not rhyming!! Whaddya say???

@ Atwal : Trying to make the most of them šŸ™‚

@ ORB : Thanx but writing like you.. Is it supposed to be a compliment šŸ˜‰ Jus kidding šŸ™‚

@ Aniket : Seriously man!! I dunno what has got into the heads of people these days.. Evrybdy is going nuts!!

@ Maruti : Agreed with you… trying not to belittle Kulbir but everything those guys did was God like.. while for Kulbir I think he is the Linux God… but coz of doing things on Linux all the time… Guess he is only in Linux.. As i said they were a combo of somani and Kulbir (though i might be belittling these 2 guys, but thats my perception ) though i might be highly erred!!
And about seniors being seniors…. Seriously i liked it when we had seniors and all.. Now you have only 2K4 batch.. which is more like our equals than our seniors… I liked the time when we were first yrs and were the junior most with nothing to worry and could turn up to seniors for anything
“”And by the way i think bloggers like us will blog when we are having more work rather than when we have lots of vella time “”
Guess this was your busiest sem… and ur blogging frequency is for everyone to see… though i have wrote 2 posts as the exams approached… but same is not true for evryone..

  8. You’r probably right, I have thought of it too. The dynamism has come down, especially after the 2K2 batch. But as Neeraj says, we’re the insiders so we’ll probably not know. Nice post!

  9. @Aniket,
“It beats me why people study so much when theyā€™re gonna get good jobs anyways”
You’r saying that people who study and those who don’t both land up with good jobs, which is of course not true. People who’s fundas are clear obviously get much better jobs than the others, and invariably you have to study to do so. What’s weird is that you’r wondering as to why people study so much.. Well, the major aim when we came into IIIT was to study, and not for something else. Of course, people came with other goals, interests, ambitions etc, but that would not have been the major aim of most people, especially when they would have come in.

  10. when we were in college we used to have the same emotions… we were in awe of our seniors…

the 98 batch (first batch of IIIT) was perhaps the best mix of talent and hard-work and fun you’d ever see… we were lucky to have seen them for a year, and believe me they were awesome… I think the names of adapa and prasad would still be doing the rounds in IIIT…
99 batch had the greatest organizers.. Felicity was planned and executed for the first time by them šŸ™‚
and our immediate senior batch, the 2K batch.. I remember them for all their teams.. be it cricket, or football, volleyball, basketball, badminton anything… they were amazing.. pratyush, surya – they were fantastic in any sport..

I could have written a similar post to what you have written when I was in college, but I spy many of my batch-mates names (including mine) in this post šŸ™‚ so don’t worry, wait for a junior to write a similar post about you guys…

  11. Lots of greats have passed from this college in the yester years , and yes we have always been awestruck by the brilliance of the names you mentioned in the post.It is quite a fact that you see ideals amongst your seniors and try to take the path they took or try to do something similar. But its very hard on the present collegians to say that the “general life” in iiit is declining.Talking about the 1-12 wing , Rathi single handedly has the persona to match anyone n everyone , plus Joy who has excelled in almost all the disciplines. There are people like Samba n others who are destined to crack CAT. Its very difficult to come across people like Prasant Gopal , with so much sincerity towords their work.Coming to our batch , we have the likes of Saraswat , Maroo , Aditya , Somani who do set standards when it comes to their territory. Not to forget Vibhav for the shear dedication with which he approaches his work.People like Sambhav are also there who are just omnipresent.Just look around yourself , you will find many more.Time spent doing BC , blogging regularly (as you cited in your post) are by no means an indicator of a “healthy” general life. Its all about doing things you want to do and what comes naturally to you, and not doing things just for the sake people can talk about it later.
Yes the activities you are talking about have declined a bit , but thats ought to be due to the incredulous change in the rule set of the campus.Previously there were hardly any restrictions , and you know what its like today.Plus there might be juniors thinking the same way about we people like we used to.So you see the things ain’t that bad.

ps :But yeah I agree on the rock band thing….not a rock band in the college…..how rude !!!

  12. well .. you look up to your seniors .. and then you pass out … and someday you realise that your juniors are looking up to u …
and thats how u realise u hav left a mark …

I have always looked up to ranta and nir for their fantastic skills not with just the computer but also because they were such excellent ppl .. and now i find my name in the this post along side theirs

someday .. ur junior ll put ur name along side some other seniors … šŸ˜› and the cycle continues šŸ˜›

  13. @himank Yeah i agree that my bloggin has declined but .. its nearly equal to you .. i posted 3 posts in this month and you posted 4 … in the case of last month i posted 4 and you posted 3 … šŸ˜€ .

But in the case of programming bonds , it has increased , check out the top 100 of spoj and look for IIITians , check out topcoder and look at ppl who have a rating above 1100.

And i totally agree with what pagare said ….

  14. abey yaar….ultimate blog..the way in which u show or share ur feelings is grea,t woh bhi ANGREJI main…kataliiii bhalooo…
being a sportman i would like to add names of Overall champ JOON and RAJA…there is no one in campus who can even dare to compare himself to any of them,God knows what’s gonna happen to IIIT football team from next year šŸ˜¦
hmmm abhi exam hai sale…baki ki BC baad after Endsem ….

  15. like I care about Endsems… šŸ™‚ so here I go once again
the rule of 85 % attendence made the significant difference in batches ,because even after 85% compulsory attendence ,people from 3rd yrs and 4th years could find too much time for BC and other stuffs (less number of subject,no attendence in many of the electives, tutor from the same batch,HSSM,and less number of Tutes) where as from UG2K4 batch this rule was implemented and 1st yr schedule make the scenario worse…people from UG2K4 are not finding vella time for BC and devloping other hidden skills other than in academcs…in their 1-2 yr of UG. whereas the batches before UG2K4 did explore theirself in whatever field they were good at for 4 years completely.
    thats my justification…like u care šŸ™‚

  16. As many ppl rightly said: There will be a time when your juniors feel like this about you and then wonder how good it “was”..

Actually its only during a retrospection that you realize that your next door neighbor was an idol for many ppl.. Its just a cycle thru which all of us lead our lives. Cheer and make use of the things you have as these four years are one of the best periods of your life.. šŸ™‚

Nicely written post … And all the best for your exams..

  17. very nice post yaar … i still remember having mail conversations with nirni … heights of intelligence .. and ranta i would say heights of innovation .. you’ll never know what he is gonna do next …

and anurag he can do everything, he can think of … very hard working … about others I dunno much because either i didn’t work with them or I didn’t have interaction.

but coming to the current situation, i too think that the spirit is declining … i can see a lot of people cramming(?) day n night just to fetch some marks (not everyone does this) … i say, who the hell will care about the marks you got in physics-1 or DLD or networks or even is c-programming … nobody cared about my AIEEE rank since last 2 years šŸ˜¦ …

i have already planned that I’ll enjoy my life to the fullest in next 1.5 years because these day will never come back … life @ job sux as said by a lot of people …

PS : Thanks for including my name šŸ˜€

  18. Nice post.. i’m not a regular blog reader thou but this post surely deserves more than a look at it… btw i totally agree with what neeraj said… but u forgot the names of bakarbajs of 2k1 batch like malik, arvind sanyam n all…. they started the 1-12 legacy afaik :)… their batch was MAST!!… well there seniors were cool too… so again we come back to what neeraj said šŸ˜€ … it happens with every batch.

  19. Yeah dude .. you are right .. these days when I come to college I do not find it the same place. I don’t know , may be people are becoming better in term of research and knowledge but environment of college getting dull day by day …. I don’t know whats the matter but our college is converting in gurukul day by day and the sad point is this that people who are living in college are supporting this kind of shit…
BTW nice blog and I am happy to see my name 2 3 times .. šŸ™‚

  20. Yeah, there are people who stand out in every batch.

For example, if you consider 2k4, along with the ones mentioned in the comments there are Varun who excelled in Cricket, Bball, Vball, DumbC etc Nageshwar Rao and Sairam, the geeks. Nageshwar Rao has done almost everything – webdesigning(he designed the felicity site), did a SOC project, completed more than 20 projects, wrote a compiler, and published a paper. And there are Pradeep, Thummala and many more.I can go on and on about many more savants.

Bottomline is – people pursue things they like, they don’t do them for recognition, and that is what keeps them apart.
