Indian Muslims

Few days ago, I read an interview by Shabana Azmi in which she had criticized Indian politicians and said that “Indian Politics is unfair to Muslims”, had it been some extremist Islamic leader, some leader of any political outfit I wouldn’t have cared much but this is coming from the mouth of an educated lady who has been quite successful and has received adulation from all strata of society. This coupled with a remark a relative of mine made once about the status of Muslims in India wondering whether Muslims also need reservations made me think on the issue of Indian Muslims.

There have always been demands of giving special status and reservations to muslims and looking at the present situation, you can’t help thinking that something needs to be done to bring them out of the depths in which general muslim is living. If you look through the student list of any good institution in India, you will find only a handful of muslim names if by chance you find any. If we look at the 20%(unofficial figure)and 13%(census) population which is muslim there must be maximum 2% in good institute.

Even if you look at the stats then if the literacy is 65.1% for Hindus then it is 59.1% for muslims, only a difference of 6% but generally we tend to see muslims in the lower strata of society.  This question definitely puzzles me as to why Indian Muslims couldn’t progress much in life and there are not many of them who are there in academic field (ofcourse there are a few exceptions but they are one in a thousands if not lakhs).

One of the reason which SCs, STs give for their backwardness is that they were suppressed for centuries by the upper classes of society but this is certainly not the case with muslims, there have been quite a few muslim rulers in India and if we consider the fact that not all of them were quite secular and even if some were completely unbiased about religion then even they wouldn’t have made any policies which would have hurt the muslim junta.

People might want to point that there are points in Muslim religion which oppose things like family planning and also the point that some of them are still ignorant enough to make their children study in Madarsas, but then you can look at the example of the gulf nations and they would also be following these philosophies and still they are rich and about family planning. We can leave these examples as India as these countries are quite different but if you look at Hindus also, then a generation back (that is of our Grand Parents), they also didn’t give a shit about family planning, then how come Hindus are far far ahead in term of education, richness or overall lifestyle.

There has always been a discrimination and hatred amongst the two religions and people might want to say that this can be one of the reason as Hindus are already powerful and they don’t let muslims rise up the pedestal but even to this point there are counter points, first of all not all Hindus are like that and the second thing is if Hindus can progress under Muslim rulers, why can’t it be vice-versa?

It seems the 2% figure I stated could be an understatement but as this table which is a report by Sachar Committee shows that the number is about 5% which is still dismally low, in contrast Sikhs constitute only 2% of the population but generally you can see more Sikhs than muslims having influential positions.

Area Muslim %
Total 4.9
PSUs 7.2
IAS,IFS & IPS 3.2
Railways 4.5
Judiciary 7.8
Health 4.4
Transport 6.5
Home Affairs 7.3
Education 6.5

All said and done about the situation, I still wouldn’t ever support any special treatment to them just because they didn’t have to suffer any atrocities or problems like for say SCs & STs for whom reservation is justified to an extent though the way it is implemented needs to be looked into. I personally feel that Indian Muslims themselves have been digging a hole while not being pressurized or anything so why should govt do anything special for them.

I am sorry if this post seems disturbing to some but just to assure you that I have no personal bias against any Muslim and I certainly respect the religion but there are some things which need to be pondered upon by somebody.

  1. I think that Muslims have to look within their community for reforms. The good thing is they have so many role models in actors, cricketers, musicians etc that they have to stop treating themselves as a minority. I read somewhere that even Saif Ali Khan was denied the right to buy a house in Mumbai by virtue of him being a muslim. The liberal voice has to rise again!
    Good post!

  2. I guess if you want to ponder further on the issue of Indian Muslims, you better read the book ‘ Indian Muslims : Where they have gone wrong’ by Dr. Rafiq Zakaria. It makes an excellent and quite a revelation sort of reading. I read it about 2 years ago. And my friend, statics hardly reveal the ground realities. The problem with us we hear things form here and there…. read a lil bit stuff somewhere and we form opinions…. I think unless we are pretty much clear about the realities forming any opinion and telling someone to do something is just getting rid of our own responsibilities. Indian Muslims do have legitimate problems……. but it’s also true they have problems within….. but if you truly listen to the plight of the parents whose only boy was picked up by the police in case of terror suspicion and beaten nearly to death… just because theirs happen to be the only Muslim family in the locality…. you may feel that not everything is all right in being a Muslim in a Hindu dominated society.

  3. If one looks at the bigger picture from a historical perspective,
one will realize there has been times when certain communities/societies were at their worst and others at their best , the balance changes with time.

Europe had their dark ages , after about five centuries, they ruled a good part of the world .

  4. Good Topic.
Sociologically speaking, members of a minority in a region always end up as the less well off, inspite of everything. No matter how much we keep saying that the minorties should quit whining about history and start working hard, we’ll never understand how it is to be a cultural minority. what we fail to see that an average human being is not a strong Barack Obama who can ignore all the unavoidable racist social behavior and neither is he/she an exceptionally intelligent freak of nature making everyone else ignores the race factor. In a nutshell, an average Indian Muslim is regular person who is either emotionally or socially impeded by the racism to some extent. Feeling out of place and different from others almost always reduces confidence, and without confidence one cannot go all the way.
I hope someday people discard racism.
And whats with all the grammatical errors??

  5. nice post…

i see many incidents where muslims are treated specially by political leaders as well..

well reservation for all the needful people irrespective of caste religion etc etc is worth it.. but providing reservation for votes should be changed and unless it is changed, our countiry’s progress is at hold…

i am not against to muslim community or reservations and yes certainly muslim community should solve their internal problems (if they exists..) and see that they are developed on par with the hindus.

    btw nice post..

  6. @ Namrata : Completely agree with you and the news about Saif is a real shocker.. Are you sure about it??? Even ppl like him are being discriminated. this is odd

@ Pankaj : Well not everything is alright but things are not that bad that people dont get a chance. Minorities may face obstacles but in a society like India, you dont mind so many hard liners (I feel so and I might be highly inaccurate)

@ Anonymous : I guess these two points are nt that related, the case of Europe if you are taking about sumthing like the development of India in the future, there are many diff points in talking about life of a sect of society and a country on the whole. Ppl might argue that until all sects are not developed a country can’t be succesful but I guess you should look upon a country (or region) in other terms too..

@ Atul : Thanks bhai.. Glad you liked it..

@ anonymousindiangirl : At last a comment from you!! 😀
Ya I agree we would never be able to understand the view point of a minority but does this mean that minorities will always remain the same?? Will we only see a single Kalam or Obama coming, not more??
Btw on a bit unrelated note, there is a piece of info I would like to share which an uncle of mine told me once. He is retired now and once he was telling me that when he started his education, the no of brahmins in educational institutes used to be quite few with “baniyas” comprising the lion’s share but with time brahmins started to percolate in the system and nowadays I dont think you will ever find scarcity of brahmins anywhere. Agreed that brahmins were superior class so it was helpful for them to come up but they came up, so I think even the muslims can do that, it will be difficult for them but can be done.
About the grammatical errors, will try to keep them in check next time onwards, though I couldnt find many in what I reread of my blog, hard to find errors in ur own writing.
Btw why do you insist on being anonymous? This is highly teasing.. Comeon yaar you have to reveal your identiy, dont be the mystery woman.

    @ Karan : Sure man

@ Rohit : First of all thanx for mentioning nice post twice.. I think there are problems for sure but I agree with you that these problems can’t be solved by things like reservation only, some radical changes need to be brought about.. Dunno who can bring them..

  7. I should have been more explicit,

Indian Muslims have had their TajMahal, Qutb Minar etc, i.e. they were at the height of civilization in many aspects

from then on they declined to what they are now.

looking at history it is highly possible that some where in the future the tide will turn.

Basically what I am saying is that the current state of Muslims is natural and happens to every group of people at some point in time.

  8. @ Anonymous : Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar are not the achievements of any ordinary muslim, they just depict the riches of a Muslim king, I am not pretty sure if at that time an avg muslim was succesful or not, but the achievements of a king can never be taken as the reflection of the whole society or a particular sect.
Btw hy are you posting as anony?? generally ppl tend to post as anony for illogical or flaming comments but you are posting sensible comments n yet!!

  9. haha well u really dont know me, I mean really, so how does it matter what my real name is 🙂 I could be anyone. at least you know I am a girl and a fellow indian.
But anyways, regarding ur respnse, there will always be Kalaams and obamas, but what about the average joe, pappu or raju whatever you call it. may be if they weren’t from a minority group they wudnt be so average.

  10. @ Anonymousindiangirl : Ok, I will not ask who you are again! Waise bhi what got into me that i started arguing with a girl.. you can never win against girls.. 😛
Coming back to the topic.. Lets hope that someday comes when this situation can be changed and we can see people from minorities also being treated like the majority.. thats the best we can do..
